It is with sorrow and love that we say goodbye to our beloved Rose, who passed away on June 14, 2017 with loving family by her side. Rose will be remembered by all who knew her for her warmth of spirit, her ready smile, her sense of humour, and her unfailing cheerfulness. Predeceased by her husband Jim. Cherished sister to Margaret (Bob) Johnstone and Lyn (late Gib) Shouldice. Beloved aunt to Laura Johnstone (Scott Pemberton), Julie Shouldice (Shawn Murphy), Heather Johnstone (Jon Reid), Brian Shouldice (Susan), and Faye Pears (Peter). Special thanks to staff at Unitarian House for their loving care, compassion, and friendship over the past three years. Family and friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue (at Richmond Road) Ottawa, on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday, June 21 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Unitarian House, 20 Cleary Avenue (www.unitarianhouse.ca) would be appreciated.

Birth1794 County Mayo, Connacht Province, Ireland; This birthdate is based on the age of 61 yrs on his tombstone. The place of birth is also on the tombstone. The town of birth is possibly Castlebar, according to research by Nancy O'Donnell.1,2 
Emigration1810 Thomas' tombstone states that he emigrated to Canada in 1810. Thomas would have been a young boy of 14, so the question is raised as to whether he came with other family members rather than alone. Researcher Nancy O'Donnell says that Thomas went back to Ireland and returned in the 1830's. It's possible that as a young boy the Canada Company guidelines were to difficult to follow, so he might have returned to Ireland, to marry and convince others to come back and work together to clear the land, log and build houses which would have been hard to achieve on your own.1

Residence1840 According to Nancy O'Donnell, Thomas had returned to Ireland after his first voyage in 1810. It is possible that the work of clearing the land and making a living proved to be difficult and so he returned to find a wife and maybe convince other male relatives to return with him. Reportedly, he returned in 1840 with his two sons, Lawrence and John. However, it states in John's obituary in 1905 that he came to the Newmarket area with his parents in 1840, implying that his mother came with them. It states that about 1843, after working in the Newmarket area for a few years that he went to live with his father on the 3rd Concession in Inisfil.
