Male, Canadian, Irish, married, born London, Ontario on September 1, 1874, age 61 years. Had worked as a laborer in a munition factory for 2.5 years, worked there until October, 1944. Wife's name Theresa Burns, father was James Sweeny and mother, Ann Costello, both parents born in Ontario. Information given by Theresa Sweeny (signed her name as such) of same address on April 5th. Buried on April 7th in Mount Hope Cemetery in Toronto. Medical Certificate states he died of arteriosclerotic heart disease of 1 year duration, and there was an autopsy. Behy, Crossmolina Civil Parish, County Mayo, Connacht Province, Ireland; The Tithe Applotment was a tax on occupiers of land that was used to support the Church of Ireland. This caused great unrest among the Catholic population. The tax was determined by the quality of the land. In 1833, on the land owned by Wm. Orme, Esq., in Behy, Crossmolina Parish, Killalla Diocese, County Mayo, three Callaghan men are listed. It appears that Frank Callaghan is the main leaseholder in Behy as he is listed first, and then the applotment lists him and 4 other tenants. Frank would probably have been responsible for collecting the tithes from these men. Court Case

10 December 1806

On this date, the trial of 11 men "were indicted for that they on the 16th of November, 1806, wickedly, maliciously, and feloniously did conspire, confederate and agree together wilfully, fleoniously, and of their malice prepense, to kill and murder Thady Lavin, against the peace and statute." This was one of the trials of the "Threshers". This was a politically motivated group of Catholics who resisted the paying of tithes to the Church of Ireland, even when paid voluntarily to Catholic priests. Their chief called himself "Capt. Thresher" and his gangs used to trhrash or beat unmercifully all lcollectors of tithes and their clerks, as well as those who paid tithes.

This particular trial was for the murder of Thady Lavin who this group in Mayo believed to have informed upon them even though he was in sympathy with them. They lured he and his wife to a house where after several hours of drinking, beat him to death and wounded his wife. Two Callaghan men were indicted. Dennis was found guilty and sentenced to death because it appeared from testimony that he stood by and did nothing to help Lavin or his wife. John was found not guilty because he had left the house to "go fishing" and was not there when Lavin was killed.; Principal=John Callaghan¹

Crossmolina Civil Parish, Connacht Province, Ireland; In 1852, the Estate of William Henry Orme, of Abbeytown, County Mayo was put up for sale. During this time, it was usually because the Estate had gone bankrupt (maybe from the Potato Famine?). Orme owned over 5000 acres, mostly in the area north and west of Crossmolina. His holdings incuded the townland of Behy. This was called "Lot 3 - Part of Attyshane, called Ballyroe and Behy. In the Behy area, three Callaghan men are listed as tenants from year to year, determinable the 1st of November of each year. However, the 2nd John listed was a tenant for one year, certain until 1st of Novermber 1852.
Patrick Callaghan 15 acres, 29 perches; 24 acres, 2 rods, 15 perches; 9 pounds, 6 shillings, 6 pence.

These men are certainly related but it is not clear how. Probably, the 2nd John is a son of one of the other as he has a small plot of land. In the 1832 Tithe Applotment, there is a Patrick listed in Behy, but no men named John. There are two other men there named Frank and Daniel in 1832.⁴

Crossmolina Civil Parish, Connacht Province, Ireland; The Tithe Applotment was a tax on occupiers of land that was used to support the Church of Ireland. This caused great unrest among the Catholic population. The tax was determined by the quality of the land. In 1833, on the land owned by Wm. Orme, Esq., in Behy, Crossmolina Parish, Killalla Diocese, County Mayo, three Callaghan men are listed. It appears that Frank Callaghan is the main leaseholder in Behy as he is listed first, and then the applotment lists him and 4 other tenants. Frank would probably have been responsible for collecting the tithes from these men. It is possible that Frank was the father of Patrick and Daniel, and maybe Daniel was the older son as he had better land. Or it is possible that the three were brothers and that Frank had the most land because he was the oldest of the three. The assessment was divided into two parts - land that was titheable and that which was non-titheable, assumably based on the quality of the land. The acreage was given in Irish measurements (multipy by 1.62 to get standard acres). These are the Tithes listed:

Court Case

10 December 1806

On this date, the trial of 11 men "were indicted for that they on the 16th of November, 1806, wickedly, maliciously, and feloniously did conspire, confederate and agree together wilfully, fleoniously, and of their malice prepense, to kill and murder Thady Lavin, against the peace and statute." This was one of the trials of the "Threshers". This was a politically motivated group of Catholics who resisted the paying of tithes to the Church of Ireland, even when paid voluntarily to Catholic priests. Their chief called himself "Capt. Thresher" and his gangs used to trhrash or beat unmercifully all lcollectors of tithes and their clerks, as well as those who paid tithes.

This particular trial was for the murder of Thady Lavin who this group in Mayo believed to have informed upon them even though he was in sympathy with them. They lured he and his wife to a house where after several hours of drinking, beat him to death and wounded his wife. Two Callaghan men were indicted. Dennis was found guilty and sentenced to death because it appeared from testimony that he stood by and did nothing to help Lavin or his wife. John was found not guilty because he had left the house to "go fishing" and was not there when Lavin was killed.; Principal=Dennis Callaghan¹
