| Obituary | 19 March 2010 | Victoria Times Colonist newspaper, Victoria, Victoria Island, British Columbia, Canada; "CHAPRONIERE, Frances Clare (Walsh) August 2, 1919 - March 15, 2015 Beloved wife and mother, and dear friend of many, Frances died after a short illness at the age of 95 at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Born in Toronto, she was one of four children. She received her education in Toronto and worked at a variety of jobs, including a bank. After four years of training as a library technician, she worked for a number of years in the teachers' library in North York. An accomplished singer, Frances sang with a band that performed regularly at the King Edward and Royal York hotels. During the Second World War, Frances joined the Red Cross, receiving training and served in Toronto. After the war, she met a young air force man, Jack Chaproniere, who had served along with her brother, maintaining and repairing Allied planes at bases in England. Frances and Jack were married October 18, 1947 in Toronto. After living and working in Toronto, they moved to a cozy cottage Jack built beside a beautiful lake in the Muskoka district north of Toronto. They enjoyed life there for nine happy years. Eventually the deep winter snow got to be a bit too much and, in 1988, they moved to Vancouver Island, taking up residence in Saanichton. Frances and Jack joined Saanich Peninsula Parish and became active members of Our Lady of Assumption Church. Some of Frances' hobbies were sewing and doing crossword puzzles. She also greatly enjoyed travelling. Another of her little pleasures was composing witty limericks. She once won a prize for a limerick she composed during a trip to Ireland, a great honour. Frances was also fascinated with astronomy. She took courses, read many books on the topic, and studied the night skies, using a telescope built by Jack. Frances was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Eileen and Pat, and her brother Bernard (Bun). She is survived by her husband Jack; her two daughters: Julie Youngash of Victoria and Nancy Daly of Toronto; four granddaughters, Carly, Lori, Dallas and Frances; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2015 at Our Lady of Assumption Church on West Saanich Road in Central Saanich. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. The family wishes to extend grateful thanks to the staff and volunteers at Saanich Peninsula Hospital, to Father Rolf for his care and compassion, and to many friends who rallied to their support."2 |
