Marriage22 January 1844 Littlehampton, South East England, England; Registration states that James Richardson, of full age, bachelor, sailor, residing in Littlehampton, son of James Richardson, mariner, married Sarah Carter, of full age, widow, residing in Littlehampton, daughter of James Winter, labourer. They were married in the parish church by John Atkins, Vicar on 22 Jan., 1844 following the published banns. The witnesses were Jacob and Harriet Richardson. It appears from census and IGI records, that Harriet was James' sister-in-law, who was married to James' younger brother, Daniel. Jacob may have been another brother or possibly another relative, since he was 10 years younger than James. The marriage was registered in the district of Worthing.; Principal=James Richardson11

Birth1803 Durley, Hampshire County, South East England, England4,5
Baptism4 September 1803 Holy Cross Anglican Church, Durley, Hampshire County, South East England, England; "Sally Dr of James & Sally Winter Labourer Baptized 4th September 1803."5
Married Name29 November 1825 Carter6
Marriage29 November 1825 St. Mary Anglican Church, Littlehampton, Sussex County, South East England, England; Principal=Richard James Carter6
(Witness) Death28 December 1832 England; The library states that it appears that he was buried on the 1st of January 1833, although the 1st is hard to read. Was 34 years of age.
We do not know if he died on land or at sea.; Principal=Richard James Carter7,8
Census6 June 1841 15 Henley Buildings, Littlehampton, Sussex County, South East England, England; The 1841 Census provides valuable insight into how Sarah managed these challenges. The census shows the family residing at #15 Henley Houses in Littlehampton, sharing their dwelling with the Holleydale family (John, age 45; Maria, age 40; Mary, age 20; Caroline, age 15) and a laborer, Arthur Stevens, age 50. This kind of shared living arrangement was common for working-class families, especially those headed by widows with limited income. Sarah, listed as age 35 (likely 37), was working as a "Laundress" to support her children: William (13), Thomas (11), John (9), and Ann (4). The eldest son Richard does not appear in the household, suggesting he may have already left home or died as a young child. Sarah's occupation as a laundress, while physically demanding and poorly paid, was one of the few respectable employment options available to widowed women with children.
The Henly Houses where they were living is now known as “Mussel Row” on the Pier Road. This row of thirteen buildings were built in 1829/30 by John Peckham Henley and were first known as Henley’s Buildings. Originally single storey watermen’s cottages, they were dubbed Muscle Row due to the muscular appearance of the men who lived there. By the end of the century they had become known as Mussel Row on the Pier Road that abuts the Aran River.; Principal=Arthur Stevens, Witness=William Thomas Carter, Witness=Thomas John Carter, Witness=John Carter, Witness=Ann Carter9,10
Married Name22 January 1844 Richardson11
Marriage22 January 1844 Littlehampton, South East England, England; Registration states that James Richardson, of full age, bachelor, sailor, residing in Littlehampton, son of James Richardson, mariner, married Sarah Carter, of full age, widow, residing in Littlehampton, daughter of James Winter, labourer. They were married in the parish church by John Atkins, Vicar on 22 Jan., 1844 following the published banns. The witnesses were Jacob and Harriet Richardson. Jacob may have been another brother or possibly another relative, since he was 10 years younger than James. The marriage was registered in the district of Worthing.; Principal=James Richardson11
Residence31 May 1860 Littlehampton, Sussex County, South East England, England; In the Brighton Gazette newspaper, a report on an inquest into a murder in Littlehampton was published. A report of one of witnesses stated: "Sarah Richardson, wife of Richardson, sworn - I live close to the Victory (Inn). I saw a man and woman going as from the Victory..." The Victory Inn, later the Nelson Inn was located on Pier Road parallel to the shore of the Arun River. It remains there today and the current address is 61 Pier Road.12
(Witness) Census1871 Littlehampton, South East England, England; "James Richardson", Schedule #42, Pier Road, married, age 60, mariner, born Littlehampton. Living with him:
"Sarah Richardson", married, wife, age 66, born Hampshire.
"Edmund King", lodger, married, age 30, Mariner, born Pagham.
"Sarah King, lodger, married, age 26, laundress, born Littlehampton.
"H.J. King", lodger, age 1, born Littlehampton.; Principal=James Richardson13
Death20 September 1871 Littlehampton, South East England, England; Death Registration states: Sarah Richardson, died the 20th of September, 1871 in Littlehampton, Listed as a 68 year old female, wife of James Richardson, Mariner. Cause of death was Ulcer of Leg and General Decay (two other causes are given but I can't decipher them), causes were certified. Present at death was Mary Ann Gravett. (Note: a Mary Ann Richardson, born about 1830, was married to Peter Gravett in Littlehampton in 1860. It would appear that Mary Ann may have been Sarah's sister-in-law). Peter and Mary Ann Gravett are living very close to Sarah and James Richardson in 1861.

James Richardson is listed as a widower in the 1881 census.; Witness=James Richardson14,15
BurialSeptember 1871 Littlehampton, South East England, England; There is a plaque on the inside of the church representing graves removed during construction in 1936. In the same area of the plaque, it states, "Richard Carter, Dec. 28, 1832" and "Sarah, wife of Jas. Richardson, Sept. 20, 1871."7

Family

Ethel Grace Payne b. 22 Oct 1885, d. 1966
Marriage1938 Worthing, South East England, England; Principal=Ethel Grace Payne9
Birth16 November 1887 Heene, Worthing, Sussex County, South East England, England; There is a discrepancy in his date of birth in different records. The birth registration occurred in the last quarter of 1887 which would seem appropriate given his baptismal date of February 5, 1888. His military record states he was born March 3, 1888 in Heene Parish, however, that does not seem possible if the baptismal date is correct. The 1939 register states he was born November 16, 1887. For now, I am using that date.1,3,4,5
Baptism5 February 1888 Worthing, South East England, England; Baptismal Record #318 states that Harold Hale, son of John and Charlotte Ann Winton of Heene, was baptized 05 February 1888 in Heene, Sussex. His father is listed as a grocer's assistant and the baptism was performed by Henry McL. Beckles, rector. (No date of birth given).3

Military28 October 1913 South East England, England; Harold Hale Winton, Attestaton Papers #938 of the Royal Flying Corps, Military Wing, states he was born in the Parish of Heene in Worthing, Sussex and that he is 25 years, 212 days old, and that he is an electrician. He served as an apprentice in 1904. He attested at S. Farnborough and was appointed on August 14, 1914. He served until he was transferred to the Air Force Reserve on May 6, 1919. His next of kin was his father, John Winton, of Kirkstall Pavillion Road in Worthing and his brother, Frederick Cornelius Winton, of the same address. His height was 5'9 3/4" and he weighed 138 1/2 pounds with pale complexion, brown heyes and dark brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He has a scar on the point of chin and on his right groin, and a slight bunion on his left foot. He was declared fir for duty. He was discharged at the rank of Sgt. on October 27, 1921. His address on discharge was 58 Dalziel Street, Hamilton, Scotland. His father's address had been changed to this also. Interestingly, he gave his date of birth as March 21, 1888 which conflicts with other records.8
