This deed would also likely indicate that Thomas was the eldest son of John Minogue and possibly the oldest grandson of John Loughlin.¹⁰

Mathew Minogue+ (c Apr 1828 - 14 Nov 1900); I have accumulated the following evidence which I believe lends credence to this theory.
1. Baptismal record of "Mathew", son of John Minogue and Mary Loughman, 30 April 1828.
2. On his marriage registration in 1860, Mathew stated that his father's name was John Minogue, farmer. No mother's name was given.
3. On his military discharge records, he stated that he was from Ballycallan (County Kilkenny).
4. When Mathew joined the RIC in 1849, he had to have a character reference and this was given by Rev. Simon Fogarty, Parish Priest of Ballycallan (helps to verify place of residence).
5. I have a DNA match on Ancestry with Scott Brown (31cM in 2 segments) as does my sister (44cM in 5 seg.) - both indicating a high confidence of 4th-6th cousin relationship. Scott's 2nd g-grandmother is Catherine Manogue (sic) and there is a paper trail for her back to Patrick Minogue and Mary Dunphy. Patrick was living in Ballyfrunk when he married in 1866. I believe that the same Patrick was baptized in 1848, son of Thomas Minogue and Catherine Phelan and they were the only Minogue family who had baptisms that listed their residence as Ballyfrunk other than the family of Patrick Minogue and Catherine Butler.
6. Mathew, from several records, such as military and death registration appears to have been born in 1829 or 1830. Due to the DNA match and his father's name being John, I therefore believe that Mathew was the son of John Minogue and Mary Loughnan and the brother of Patrick and Thomas.^9,14,15,16

Ballycallan Civil Parish, Leinster Province, Ireland; I have no definitive proof that this is "John Minogue" as the only "Manogue" listed in the Ballycallan Tithe Applotment Books is on a property in Ballyfrunk and the listing is for "Dooley Thos. Manogue". No taxes were assessed on the property. John Minogue is the only adult male that I have found in the 1820's Catholic Church records, so I am placing this entry under his name.⁵

There is a listing for a "John Minogue" in Griffith's Valuation for Lot 5 in Gorteenteen. Could this be our "John" - I believe he had relocated from Ballyfrunk which was the townland that bordered Gorteenteen to the north, actually across the road from Ballyfrunk property that is now owned by the Manogue family. The family states that at one point they were evicted from Ballyfrunk to Gorteenteen. I am listing this land as belongong to our John, but there is no definitive proof of this now. There are no other John Minogue's in the church records for Ballycallan that would fit here.
There are no Minogue families listed in 1849 in Griffith's in Ballyfrunk.
The Griffith's listing states that "John Minogue" was on Lot #5 and that the Lessor was Francis Shearman, Esq. It is the only property in Gorteenteen owned by this landlord, however, he is a very large Occupier of land in Ballyfrunk. It consisted of House, Offices, and Land. The land was sized at 10 acres, 3 roods, 7 perches and valued at 6 pounds. The Buildings were valued at 2 pounds, 10 shillings which was on the high end for this townland. Total Valuation was 8 pounds, 10 shillings.⁶

This transfer, typical of the pattern seen when a property holder died, suggests that John Minogue passed away around 1857, with the land passing to his son Thomas. This inheritance pattern supports the hypothesis that Thomas was the oldest surviving son of John Minogue and Mary Loughlin.; Witness=Mary Loughlin^7,8

However, the date of birth of the John, born to Thomas and Catherine, would be about correct for a man marrying Johanna in 1881. Also, John and Johanna named their first 2 children, Catherine and Thomas, who possible were the names of John's parent (John - born in 1849). Also, in John and Johanna's marriage record it states that the residence was Ballyhendricken, which could have been the home of Johanna. Ballyhendricken is only 4 km from Ballyfrunk. Also, the baptismal sponsor for one of John & Johanna's children was a James Minogue, who was possibly the brother of John.¹
