| Military | 4 June 1912 | On Attestation Papers, it stated that Alfred Henry Ryan of Hornsby, Middlesex County, was a British subject, aged 19 years, 6 months and that he was a clerk employed by H. B. Sedgwick Company at 31 Lombard Street. He was residing at 20 Effingham Road, in Hornsey and had never been in the Military other than the 1st Cadet Battalion and that his discharge was produced. He attestested that he was willing to serve for 4 years if his services were required. He was declared physically fit for service. On July 4, 1916, he was admitted to the Convalescent Hospital in Woodcote Park Military Convalescent Hospital in Epsom, Surrey, and stayed there until August 30th. (see image about hospital) at this time he was in the 1/7th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment and his service number was 200273. On 25 Nov. 1916, he embarked from Folkestone and arrived in Boulogne. He was killed in action on the 11th of April in 1917 while in France. He was awarded the British War Medal 1914-1919 and the Victory Medal and the 1914-15 Star. These were given to his mother on 1919 and 1920 for Private Ryan.4,5 |
