On Saturday, Dec. 5th, there passed away at Gilford, Ont., one of the oldest pioneers of the township in the person of Mrs. John Gibbons. Mrs. Gibbons, who was in her 93rd year, was born in Castlebar, Mayo County, Ireland, and with her parents Mr. and Mrs. John McNally, a pensioner of the the Battle of Waterloo, came to West Gwillimbury about the year 1842. In 1852, she married Mr. John Gibbons and they settled on the farm on which she died, her husband having pre-deceased her nine years ago. Their family of three sons and six daughters are all living, John, on the homestead where she died, Thomas, Mrs. Wm. Walker and Mrs. Thos. Thorpe, of this township, James of Battleford, Sask., Mrs. P. Keaney of British Columbia, Mrs. P. J. Bonner, Mrs. M. Gill and Miss Bridget of Spokane, Wash. Besides her children, she leaves to mourn her loss, one sister, Mrs. M. Dillon of Gilford, thirty-nine grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchidren. Mrs. Gibbons was a --- type of the old Irish people, large hearted, no one ever wanted while she could help in any way. The first in sickness and need and always glad to help a neighbor, she was also first at a social gathering up to the last, and able even last Christmas at the family gathing to sing one of her old Irish songs and dance a few steps of an Irish jig. In religion, she was a staunch Roman Catholic, never missing mass if able to atttend, although having to drive seven miles in all kinds of weather. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Monday, Dec. 7th, to Bradford and then to McGann's for burial. Rev. Father Wedlock Taking charge. The pall bearers were Messr. Dolphe Thorpe, Edmund Walker and Charles Gibbons, grandchildren, John Dilon, Patrick O'Donnell and William Hickey, nephews."9 |

(I cannot see the original record online, however, I wonder if there is a transcription error on the part of RootsIreland.ie or in the original record by the priest. The transcription states that the name of the bride was Catherine Butler, however, in three subsequent baptismal records, the first one a year and a half after the marriage, the name of the mother is listed as Margaret Butler. For now, I am making the assumption that Catherine and Margaret are the same person as there are no other marriages for Patrick Minogue in the early 1840s and no baptisms for a child with the name of the mother as Catherine Butler.); Groom=Patrick Minogue, Bride=Margaret Butler2 |
