Anecdote14 November 1900 Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States; Article from The Scranton Republican newspaper:
"Where Is Patrick Syron?
The friends and relatives of Patrick S. Syron, a well known coachman and Spanish War veteran, of the West Side, are much concerned at present over his whereabouts. He has been absent from home since the night of election when he was last seen or heard of in this city.
For many years, Mr. Syron has been in the employ of Calvin Seybolt, the well known feed mill owner of the central city, first as a coachman. He then resigned and enlisted as a member of the engineer corps which left this city during the Spanish War and served in Cuba with other Scranton volunteers. He was made sergeant, and was honorably discharged at the close of that conflict. Mr. Syron was re-engaged by Me. Seybolt in his mill and worked steadily until the afternoon of election day, Tuesday last, when he returned to the home of his sister Mrs. McAndrew, wife of Anthony McAndrew, proprietor of a hotel on North Main Avenue, where he boarded. He went to the polls and voted and came back for his supper. Soon after 7o'clock that evening he went to the central city, like hundreds of others, to listen to election returns. At midnight he met a policeman, an intimate friend, with whom he chatted pleasantly for a few minutes. He told the officer that he was on his way to his home on the West Side. Other friends saw and spoke to Mr. Syron on the same night but none have seen him since or learned anything about him.
Great surprise is expressed by all who know Mr. Syron and have heard of his disappearance. He was an unmarried man of excellent soldiery bearing, and had no bad habits. He is possessed of unusual intelligence and was regarded by his friends as one of the most pleasing companions. He enjoyed the respect of all and his associations at home and elsewhere were of the most friendly character. He was well thought of by his employer and his family. He had frequently of late expressed a desire to visit Buffalo, N.Y. Communication wit that city has failed to locate him.
Yesterday Mr. McAndrew, his brother-in-law, visited police headquarters in the hope that he might be able to learn of Mr. Syron's whereabouts and to solicit the aid of the police in finding him. The missing man was dressed in a dark suit of clothes and wore a derby hat when he left home. He is easily distinguished by his erect and graceful walk and by short side whiskers, which he wore. He was otherwise smooth shaven. Mr. Syron was much interested in the life of a soldier and belonged to the Hibernian military organization and Thirteenth regiment when the latter was identified with the Pennsylvania Guards. Mr. and Mrs. McAndrew, friends and the police will be pleased to hear of any news that will assist them in locating Sergeant Syron."
On November 16th, this article appeared: "Sergeant Syron Located. The lost has been found. A few days ago The Republican contained an article which described the mysterious disappearance of Sergeant Patrick Syron, a former coachman, who had not been seen here since Tuesday, Nov. 6, the day of the election. His sister, Mrs. Anthony McAndrew, with whom he boarded on North Main avenue, her husband, the police officers and the young soldier's friends were asked to assist in locating him. Yesterday word was received at the McAndrew household to the effect that he had been found in Syracuse, whither he went to visit relatives. He wrote to a friend in this city, who having read of Syron's departure in The Republican, at once notified the latter's worried sister."1
