Visitation will be at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Tuesday, July 5th, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9p.m. and on Wednesday, July 6th, from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Funeral Service to take place on Wednesday, July 6th, at 3 p.m. from Barrett's Chapel. Inurnment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. No flowers by request. On this date, George took the oath entering the Overseas Canadian 10th Halifax Seige Battery in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. The oath stated that "The Recruit above-named was cautioned by me that if he had made any false answer to any of the above questions he would be liable to be punished as provided in the the Army Act. The above questions were then read to the Recruit in my presence. I have taken care that he understands each question, and that his answer to each question has been duly entered as replied to, and the said Recruit has made and signed the declaration and take the oath before me at Halifax, this 21 day of April 1917".

He then signed the Declaration which stated that "I hereby engage and agree to serve in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force, and to be attached to any arm of the service therein, for the term of one year, or during the war now existing between Great Britain and Germany should tht war last longer than one year, and for six months after the termination of that war provided His Majesty should so long require my services, or until legally discharged." Signed: Geo. J. Marshall, April 20th, 1917.1 
Note6 December 1917 Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; The address that George gave when he enlisted in the army was just a couple of blocks outside of the devastation tht occured during the Halifax Explosion. It is probable that the house would have sustained some damage, at least in breaking windows. A brief background on the Halifax Explosion: The disaster occurred at 9:04 AM on the morning of Thursday, December 6, 1917. It was the result of an unlikely collision in the narrows of Halifax Harbour, involving the French ship, Mont Blanc - loaded with tons of wet and dry picric acid, TNT, gun cotton and benzol - and the Belgian Relief vessel, Imo, under Norwegian registry. A fire on the Mont Blanc resulted in a 2.9 kiloton explosion about twenty minutes later near Pier 6 that devastated the the north end of the city and killed approximately 2,000, severely injured 9,000. The major devastation was within a half mile radius of the blast with over $35,000,000 damage. Two back-to-back severe winter storms began the following day and exacerbated the already grim situation.

(British War Medal: Granted to all officers and other ranks, who either entered a Theatre of War on duty, or left places of residence and rendered approved service overseas, on or before midnight 11 November 1918. According to regulation, all veterans of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who proceeded to the United Kingdom were eligible for the award. Victory Medal: Granted to all officers and other ranks who actually served on the establishment of a unit in a Theatre of War on or before midnight 11 November 1918.)9

Obituary26 December 2020 Ontario, Canada; It is with great sadness that the family of George James Marshall announces his passing, peacefully in his home, on Friday, December 25, 2020 at the age of 89 years. George was born on April 4, 1931 in Hamilton, Ontario, spent part of his youth in Newfoundland and returned to Hamilton where he grew up and eventually met his wife Sheila. George spent most of his adult life working for Federal Business Development Bank which brought him to Hamilton, St. Catharines, Owen Sound, Peterborough and Toronto. He was involved in numerous organizations over the years and was committed to his personal fitness. George is survived by his children, Jennifer (Dave) Smith, Susan, Kathleen (Mike) Dvernechuk, Andrew (Elizabeth) and Greg (Anne). George will also be fondly remembered by his eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. George is predeceased by his parents George Senior and Catherine, wife Sheila (nee Ross) and his siblings Marguerite, Loretta, Annabelle and Neil.
