Worcester Telegram, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States; "Worcester - Matthew A. Marshall, 97, formerly of 39 First Street, died Wednesday, September 1, at the St. Francis Home where he had lived since 2000.
His wife of 67 years, Bridget "Bridie" (Buckley) Marshall, died in 2000. His daughter, Mary Lynch of West Boylston, died in 2002.
He leaves a son John F. Marshall and his wife Patricia of Wales, Mass., seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was born in Burin, Newfoundland, Canada, son of John and Katherine (Penney) Marshall.
Mr. Marshall was a salesman for 40 years at Mayflower School St. Storage Co., a storage and moving business.
He was a founding member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, where he was a longtime volunteer with its St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus Alhambra council and was an avid Red Sox fan.
Calling hours at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St. are Friday, Sept. 3 from 6 to 8pm. The funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 4, from the funeral home with a Mass at 10am in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 341 June St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nazareth Home for Boys, 77 Mulberry st. Leicester, 05124.⁸

Charles Marshall+ (c Nov 1856 - Jan 1881); Although I don't have definitive proof that the Charles Marshall who married Elizabeth Murray, I believe these facts bolster the case: 1. DNA matches between myself and descendants of Richard Joseph Marshall 2. This Charles died in 1881 and Richard George Marshall and Mary Hartson named a son born in 1881 as Charles (likely after Charles, his son from his 1st marriage had died that year) 3. Richard Joseph and his parents were Catholic as was Richard George 4. Charles and Elizabeth, his wife, named their first son, Richard Joseph (possibly after his father, Richard George) 5. No Burin Catholic Church after 1872 records mention a Charles Marshall as a sponsor to any of baptisms or marriages, possibly indicating that Charles had left the Burin area for St. John's.

This indenture made and concluded at Burin in Placentia Bay in the Southern District of the Island of Newfoundland this first day of October in the fifth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria Queen defender of the Faith and in the Year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and forty one Between William Henry Benest attorney of John Benest son of Francis Merchant of Jersey as appearance by Person bearing date the seventeenth day of March in the present year, and signed seated and delivered in the presence of Philip Hellener(?) Merchant and Michael Blumfield Solicitor both of Jersey aforesaid and certified to by Her Excellency Major General Sir Edward Gibbs Wright of the most Honorable Military order of the Bath Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of the Island of Jersey, his seal and signature being thereto affixed of the one part and Richard Marshall of Burin aforesaid in the Distrist aforesaid Merchant of the other par. All that Fishing Room and or Premises commonly called or known by the name of Bakers Point situate lying and being at Burin in the District aforesaid of which the said John Benest, son of Francis is proprietor as appears by Deed on Instrument recorded in her Majesty’s Supreme Court of Newfoundland in Book HH fol 212 particulars and boundaries of which are fully set forth in the Diagram hereunto annexed and together with all the Buildings and Erections and all the appurtenances thereunto belonging of whatever nature or kind soever and all rents and Emoluments which by Judgment of the Honorable the Southern Circuit Court in October last or otherwise may be arising thereon from and after the unsealing, and delivery of this Instrument together with all the rights and privileges thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining. To have and to hold the same the said Richard Marshall his Heirs, Executors, Administrators, and assigns for the said term of Ninetynine Years by paying in addition to the yearly rent of one Shilling Sterling All for Church or other rates, and all taxes whatsoever together with all the other Legislative or Legitimate claims that may be levied or imposed in and during the said period of Ninetynine years until the said Richard Marshall, himself his Heirs, Executors, and administrators doth covenant promise and agree to and with the said William Henry Benest son of Francis to keep the said Room and premises in good and sufficient repair for and during the said term of ninetynine years.
To the Fulfilling of the first part of this Indenture the said Willliam Henry Benes such attorney and as aforesaid doth herby in knowledge to ? the said sum of two hundred pounds currency being in hand duly paid by the said Richard Marshall as appears by the Receipt hereunto annexed and that he will against the said John Benest son of Francis his Heirs Executors Administrators and assigns and amongst all and every there person and persons whatsoever warrant and shall forever defend by these presents and to the keeping in quiet possession of him the said Richard Marshall his heirs and assigns for the full term of this Lease.

     The deposition of Roger Boucher in answer to a Wit Issued at the Suit of Richard Marshall the thirtieth day of September for the sum of Four Pounds Currency.

     This deponent is incapacitated from sickness having been confined to his house for the last two years and _________ in appearing to defend the said notion and in consequence beg to State by these means to the honorable Court that he is not indebted to the said Richard Marshall any sum as sued for or otherwise. This deponent further states that a person of the name of William alias John Brown who may have been in the employ of said Richard Marshall did agree with him for taking down a chimney saying at the time that he had a footing that allowed him from his master to do as he pleased and would engage to take down and again rebuild the chimney for the completion of which and to present if from ___________ he was to be paid the sum of Seven pounds Currency instead of this being fulfilled it was fallen only partially down. He had two men to assist him and instead of ____him more than a fortnight as we had contemplated it would have been done. He was only employed six days and the chimney not in the least improved from something or otherwise. This deponent further states that the job even now is not completed in consequence he paid the said Brown three pounds in part and on the completion of the whole which Brown suggested to do when his time would be out with this matter the remainder of which should be considered formerly entitled to him was to be paid. This deponent further most positively _____ and declares I that he does not nor ever did consider that Richard Marshall had any interest or control over the transaction and that he was not considered to have any control over the said Brown or this agreement until after such tine as the term of the fortnight had expired and therefore begs that the suit may be by your honorable Court discharged. This deponent in conclusion further states the he ___________ considers himself justly that indebted to the said William alias John Brown for such a sum as should or may be considered a prior Equivalent for the job when completed but he cannot for a moment entertain an opinion that your honorable Court will for a moment consider is just or equitable that he should pay Seven pounds for six days Labour and then ____ left in an unfinished state _________ nothing in the least improved.

The will also stated that Matthew or his children if he had died was to "buy out" Richard's portion of the business on 01 January 1864 for the sum of fifty pounds. This may have been the beginning of the commercial ventures of the Marshalls of Burin which seems to have just terminated (1990's) after 140 years. The will also mentions a salt store that they owned together. Both sons were also left the Schooners, the Milo (to Matthew) and the Nautilus (to Richard) so they obviously were also in the shipping/fishing business.; Principal=Matthew Marshall¹⁰

Burin, Newfoundland, Canada; This document implies that John O'Neill and Richard Marshall were trustees for Susannah (daughter of Isaac Penney and Elizabeth Huelan) Benning and possibly for their 12 children in case of her husband Clement Benning's death. Clement did die 5 years after this document was signed. Two years after his death, Susannah married John O'Neil, the trustee. The land sold in this document belonged to William Hooper, the husband of Richard Marshall's sister.

This Indenture made the twentieth day April in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty between William Hooper of Burin in the Island of Newfoundland Esquire of the one part and John ONeil and Richard Marshall of the same place Gentlemen Trustees as hereafter named of the other part. Witnesseth that the said William Hooper for and in consideration of the sum of Five shillings of current money of the said Island, to him in hand and truly paid by the said John ONeil and Richard Marshall the receipt and payment thereof and hereby duly acknowledge and released hath granted bargains ? assigned ? and released and by these presents doth grant bargain sale assign ? and release unto the said John O'Neil and Richard Marshall their Heirs executors administrators and assigns all that piece or parcel of ground situate lying and being in Burin aforesaid in the same Island and bounded as follows that is today commencing at the angle formed in the South East side of the Public Road leading from Mr. P. Hoyles and his assignees all that parcel of land farm and premises now in my possession situate and being at Burin in the Southern District on the road between Burin and Garnish bounded on the West by the water at Burin Bay, on the Northwest by land of John Taylor and towards the south and East by ungranted land the said farm containing forty three acres more or less and being more particularly described in a grant from ? own to me from Sir Alexander Bannerman dated the twenty ninth day of April Anno Domini eighteen hundred and sixty two and all ways buildings easements and appurtenances as to same belonging and all the estate right title and interest of any of the said Richard Marshall...Provided always that should the said Richard Marshall my executors...will out truly pay to the said Hugh W. Hoyles...the said sum of thirty pounds currency with lawful interest and the cost of this mortgage in six months from this date then this assigned shall be void and the said Marshall hereby covenant promise and agree to and with the said Hugh W. Hoyles and his assigns that I have good and lawful right and power to convey the said land and premises in manner aforesaid that the same is wholly incumbered, that I will repay the amount aforesaid pursuant to the condition for redemption aforesaid ant that it shall be lawful for the said Hugh W. Burin, Newfoundland, Canada; Listed in the Lovell 1871 Provincial Business Directory: Richard Marshall, fisherman and John Marshall, dealer. Also this description is given of the town: town of considerable trade on the west side of Placentia Bay, district of Burin. It has perhaps the findest harbor in Newfoundland, with two entrances, one to the south-east and the other to the west. The harbor is divided into three arms, and a ferry plies across it. A packet boat runs once a fortnight to Little Placentia, distant about 50 miles, connecting with the over-land route from St. John's, 86 miles. It is a post town and port of entry. Distant from St. John's, by steamer once a fortnight, 162 miles, fare $6. Mail fortnightly. Population 1850.; Principal=John Marshall²³

Richard Marshall of Burin aforesaid yeoman maketh oath and saith that he is defendant in the above named suit.

That the writ in this cause was issued on the fourth day of June last and was served upon deponent on or about the seventeenth day of August instant.

That this action is brought to recover wages for seven years and a half and the amount in dispute between the parties is dependent on the fact as to whether the agreement made which was not in writing was for twenty or thirty pounds a year.

That Richard Marshall Junior now resident at Harbour Breton is a material and necessary witness for deponent in this cause to prove that the agreement between the said parties was for wages at the rate of twenty pounds currency per year and not thirty pounds as contended by the plaintiff.

That said Richard Marshall Junior was deponent’s bookkeeper at the time of the plaintiff agreement and continued to be so for about four years or more.

That the plaintiff was from time to time referred by deponent when making applications for judgment on account at other times to his said bookkeeper for the purpose of ascertaining the state of his account and deponent is informed and believes that he said Richard Marshall Junior had several or many conversations with the plaintiff which would go to prove that the plaintiff knew and admitted from the state of his account as admitted and payments made on account of that his wages were at the rate of twenty pounds per annum and that the plaintiff knew from the conversations aforesaid and has frequently admitted that such was the state of fact.

That deponent believes the said witness was from other facts than those herein stated which will substantiate the defense to this action.

That the said Richard Marshall Junior is the servant of Philip Hebert of Harbor Breton aforesaid, and deponent has not had opportunity since the commencement of this suit to communicate with the said Richard Marshall Junior in order to obtain his evidence at the trial of this cause and this it is impossible for the said party to be present at Burin to give evidence upon the trial for this cause.

Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada; Reportedly, both Isabella and John Kelly died before 1890 and Vincent, their son, was raised by the Wagg family in Kelly's Cove, not sure what happened to the two girls at this point. In 1888, Richard George Marshall, Isabella's father had another daughter and he named her Isabelle, so I suspect this was because the first Isabella had died. There is a death announcement in the Harbour Grace Standard newspaper on 14 March 1888: On the 4th inst., at Burin, Isabella, wife of Mr. John Kelley.; Principal=Isabella Marshall^28,29,30

It also states that the lighthouse was only accessible by boat so this may imply that the family lived there. An article in an 1895 newspaper stated that a new light-house keeper was appointed on the 13th of April 1894, so it appears that Richard had finished his tenure by then.^12,31

The next meadow adjoining meaning the fourth from the East to the left vacant for the building of Stable or outhouses or other conveniences for the use of the farm, and not to be the special property of anybody, and the fifth meadow from the East to my daughter Rosannah, and the Sixth meadow to my son, George and the seventh and last to my daughter Isabella. This includes land now cleared and known as Meadows. The land East and West not cleared and not left to any of my children in particular, I leave in the hands of my two executors to dispose of or divide as they may think proper for benefit of my children to be given them or value thereof the above land is known as Bally Brady farm and situated at North east side of Burin Bay Arm. I also bequeath unto my grandaughter, Beatrice (of Richard) the piece of land next adjoining my son, Matthew, to the South west as marked in the grant of my Father's, and lastly I appoint John Winter and my nephew, John Marshall to be my true and lawful executors to carry out the condition of my last will and testament.

- On January 12, 1904, John Winter and John Marshall, clerk, of Burin, received Letters of Administration for "Richard Marshall, late of Burin, in the Electoral District of Burin, lighthouse keeper, deceased, died with a Will...that the testator died at Burin aforesaid on the (left blank) day of November, one thousand and ninety seven; and that the gross value of the estate and effects of the said testator is fifty dollars..."

A copy of his Will is included.

"...The Petition of John Winter of Burin, subcollector of Customs (? this was not clear) and John Marshall of same place, clerk. Humbly Sheweth as follows:
1. Richard Marshall, late of Burin in the Southern District, Light House keeper, died at that place in the month of November A.D. 1897.
2. The said deceased at the time of his death was possessed of property within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court of the probable value of fifty dollars. A full and correct statement and inventory of the property and effects of the said deceased is hereto annexed.
3. The said deceased before his death made and executed a last Will and Testament which is hereto annexed and marked "A". In and of the said Will your Petitioners are appointed Executors thereof.
4. No probate of any will or letters of administration of the estate of said deceased have been applied for or granted to any other person.
Petitioners pray that probate of the said Will of the said deceased may be granted to them. And Petitioners are in duty bound will ever pray.
Dated at Burin this 1st day of October 1903."

A, now deceased family member, stated that this child was adopted and had previouly been an indentured servant. The baptismal record states that the "parents" are Richard Marshall and Elizabeth Emberly. Which Richard Marshall is this? There is a baptismal record for an "A. Mary", listed as daughter of Richard Marshall and Mary Ann Pine in 1878 (the same day as their marriage). One possibility is that they adopted her when she was small and then for some reason, she was later given to Elizabeth Emberly. Elizabeth Emberly could not have been her mother as she would have only been 10 years old when Alice was born. There is no marriage record in the Burin Catholic records for Richard Marshall and Elizabeth Emberly and in 1884, he was still married to Mary Ann Pine.; Principal=Elizabeth Emberly, Principal=Alice Mary (?)

According to the birth certificate he would have been 78. (Don't know why the discrepancy).⁵

Oshawa, Durham County, Ontario, Canada; Although for many years the family believed that Neil died of a heart attack, new information from his stepdaughter, Karen, appears that this was not the case. Karen tells this of the events of the night of his death - According to Faye, Neil's wife, and her friends, they had been out to a dance and later went to a friend’s home to continue the party. Apparently there was a little dog that kept worrying around Neil and that nobody could understand why. He went outside for a cigarette and when he came, he went to the bathroom. The dog kept whining and scratching at the door. When he came out of the bathroom, the dog still would not leave him alone. When he came back into the living room he dropped to the floor and died. The coroner’s report was a brain aneurysm rather than an MI. They thought that the little dog sensed something was wrong with Neil.

An electrician, Richard Neil Marshall died suddenly in Oshawa on Sunday, June 25, 1989.
He was a resident of Oshawa and was born on Oct. 6, 1934, a son of the late George and Catherine Marshall.
Mr. Marshall was employed with the Howard Marten Company in Pickering and had been an electrician all his working life.
He enjoyed sports in his spare time.
Mr. Marshall is survived by his wife, the former Shirley 'Faye' Currier; two stepchildren, David Frederick Armstrong and Karen Anne Armstrong, both of Oshawa; a brother, George Marshall and his wife, Sheila, of Peterborough; two sisters, Mrs. Pat Monogue (Loretta) of Orange, Texas and Mrs. William Reynolds (Anne) and one granddaughter, Jennifer.
A sister, Mrs. Alex Sturrock, (Marguerite) died before him.
A funeral service was held in the McIntosh-Anderson Funeral Home on June 28, 1989 followed by internment in Thorton Cemetery. Rev. Philip Jones officiated at the service.
Memorial donations to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.¹

Matthew Marshall b. 2 Sep 1847, d. 17 May 1906; Records indicate that Richard Vincient was living with Matthew Marshall and his wife, Martha Hanrahan, by 1891, when he was 12 years of age. They appeared in the Census in Halifax there and Richard was listed as the son of Matthew. In her death registration, Martha's information is provided by her "nephew", a carriage trimmer. Richard is listed in earlier Halifax City Directories as a carriage trimmer and living with Matthew and his wife. Matthew was still in Newfoundland in 1882, and does not appear in a Nova Scotia Census for 1881. It appears that he took charge of Richard at some point and took him to Halifax to live with him. Confusing the issue is that Richard, on his marriage registration, listed his parents as Matthew Marshall and Mary Farrell. The only other explanation would be that Matthew and Mary had a liason and Richard was a product of that union - that seems unlikely though as he was "born on schedule" in the 2 year cycle of children of Ambrose Marshall and Mary Farrell. Richard may have felt that his father was closer to him than Ambrose and so named him as his father. Not sure though, why he listed his mother then as Mary Farrell and not Martha Hanrahan.¹

She resides in Middletown and I ahve no children. My last foreign address was Halifax, Nova Scotia and I emigrated from there to Boston for permanent residence on April 18, 1912 on the vessel SS Halifax.
