Report of Accident from the Western Star newspaper on April 23, 1941: In a motor accident last Tuesday night John Wm. The tragedy occurred about 11 o'clock Tuesday night, on a slope immediately to the east of Rourke's Brook on the Curling Highroad. The bus with passengers on board was west-bound at the time. So far as can be gathered from occupants of the car the two men were standing on the side of the road when the lights of the car flashed on them, but as the car drew near they seemed to have tried to cross the road. The police arrived on the scene within a few minutes and found John W. McCarthy beneath the vehicle. After extricating the victim he was immediately taken to hospital at Corner Brook where upon arrival it was found that life was extinct. The remains were taken to the home of the deceased on Wednesday, and the burial took place the following afternoon at Holy Redeemer cemetery. Deceased was 63 years of age, married.
