Cherished grandfather of Deziree, Jamie and Jeff. Predeceased by his beloved wife Ann, son Michael and sister Margo. Dear brother of Joyce Shea and Mary Wiell. Bill was President of Hamilton Ornamental Iron Works and a long-time member of the Burlington Golf and Country Club. Special thanks to the staff at Joseph Brant Hospital, LHIN Hamilton Niagara, Chartwell Lakeshore Place and Billings Court Manor for their care and compassion. A Celebration of Bill's life will be held for family and friends at a later date. Shelburne, Ontario, Canada; "RIDEOUT, Alphonsus ""Al"" Passed away peacefully on Monday, June 10, 2019 in his 77th year after a short battle with cancer. Loving husband of 53 years to Mary Rideout. Cherished father to Doug (Julie), Darrell and Kevin (Heather). Will be sadly missed by his siblings Sheila, Loretta, Hilda, Betty, Mike, Rick and Jim. Predeceased by his parents Richard and Elizabeth Rideout and his siblings Anne, Marilyn and Sam. Loving papa to Dougie, Dakota, Josh, Jono, Brenden, Brynn, Scott, Billy, Gracie and Austin. Great-papa to Douglas, Makai, Kamdin, Kyler and Kodi. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends, specifically Pete Hald, his extended family and the horse racing community. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 16th from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Shelburne Legion - Museum Room (front hall). If desired, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or SPCA would be greatly appreciated."¹

All Hallows College, Dublin, Ireland; From the Find a Grave Website - Ordained a Catholic Priest in Dublin in 1897 and was concecrated Archbishop of St. John's, Newfoundland, on June 29, 1915. He was Made Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, June 24, 1940. He served as Archbishop of St. John's from 1915 until 1950, at the time of his appointment and until 1949 Newfoundland was not part of Canada, so he reported directly to the Pope, he opposed the confederation of Newfoundland and Canada.

He was born 19 Feb 1874, Place Harbour, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. Fr. Roche was educated at St. Patrick's Hall, St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's and All Hallows College, Dublin, Ireland, where he was ordained on June 24, 1897.

Archbishop Roche died in 1950 and is buried under the main altar of the Basilica in St. John's.
After ordination he returned to Newfoundland and ministered in Conception Bay South, in 1907 became the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of St. John's.

He was appointed Archbishop by Pope Pius X. and consecrated by Monsignor Stagni, Apostolic Delegate to Newfoundland at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 29 June 1915.

He suffered from tuberculosis, however it was treated in New York and was able to return to his pastoral duties.

Responsible for the developments of many educational institutions he was significantly responsible for the development of St. Clare's Mercy Hospital.

He opposed the confederation of Newfoundland and Canada as did many other Catholic clergy, and articulated his view prior to the 1948 referendums. In reaction to this, the Loyal Orange Association advised Protestants to resist Catholic influence by supporting union with Canada. The results were correlated with demographics, and a majority of districts on the Avalon peninsula with mostly Catholic voters supported responsible government instead of confederation.³

St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada; From the Evening Telegram, November 4, 1894: "No more painful duty has devolved upon us, in all our journalistic career, than that which we are compelled to discharge today in recording the death of Mr. John T. Roche, reporter of this paper, and one of the most popular and talented members of our staff. He passed away at 9 o'clock last evening, after barely a week's illness, and before anyone but a few of his nearest and dearest friends had the least idea that he was dangerously ill.

"Johnnie", as we all familiarly called him, became a member of our staff about eighteen months ago. He joined us on a recommendation from the Rev. Mr. Slattery, head of the Christian Brothers Community, from whom he received the excellent education which so well fitted him for the position he subsequently occupied. His genial disposition and obliging manner soon endeared him to everyone in the office. Even the newsboys expressed their delight when they saw "Johnnie" coming, and laughed heartily at his kindly greeting, as he always had something pleasant to say to them.

As a reporter, he was diligent, painstaking and indefatigable. Being extensively read for a young man of his age - he was scarcely 20 - possessing a well-balanced mind, and a thorough knowledge of stenography, he could report, almost verbatim, the most rapid speaker; and, had Providence, in His inscrutable wisdom, though fit to spare his life, we believe he would have made one of the smartest journalists the colony has ever produced.

"Johnnie" was a native of Placentia. His father, the late Mr. Edward Roche, occupied the office of telegraph operator there for many years. His brother, Edward Roche, is an ecclesiastical student at All-Hallows College, Dublin. He is a nephew of Thomas O'Rielly, Esq., J. P., and a cousin of the Rev. Dr. O'Rielly of this city.

We deeply sympathize with all his relatives and friends in the bereavement they have thus sustained by the almost sudden death of one so full of promise and with such a bright future before him.

But There is a world above,

A whole eternity of love,
Formed for the good alone."

At 8:30 o'clock this morning the mortal remains of Mr. John T. Roche, reporter of the evening Telegram staff, were taken to the Railway Station for conveyance to Placentia, the place of birth and the cherished home of childhood. The remains were encased in a most beautiful casket, furnished by Mr. T. M. White, undertaker. The cortege was a respectable one. Companions at the Alma Mater, St. Bonaventure's College, were pall bearers. Next to

At Placentia station the cortege was resumed, those there who held deceased dear attending in goodly numbers. The funeral services were read by the Rev. Dr. O'Reilly, and there were many moist eyes and heaving breasts, of even the strongest men, as the remains were being interred - interred near the remains of his loved, lost and now

How cherished was the place of birth to the deceased! To make his heart strings vibrate with gladness, it was only necessary to declare the arrival in the city of a Placentia man or schooner, or to recount the good actions of any one of them. In addition to the exemplary characteristics of the deceased, pointed out yesterday, it is not amiss to state that he was

An Indefatigable Teacher

of the night school, under Dr. O'Reily, for those boys and young men who were denied education, or had suffered for want of opportunities; and was, too, secretary of the League of the Sacred Heart, being unanimously elected. He has departed, and his friends grieve for him, and breathe a fervent prayer. Yet all's well -

Thy purpose, Lord, we cannot see,
But all is well that's done by Thee."²
