| Obituary | 16 February 1921 | The Scranton Republican, Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States; "Well Known Education Ill But One Week - Francis X. McAndrew, aged 23 years, for some time principal of Thomas Henry (No. 23) School, North Scranton, and one of the best known young men in the city, died at 1:45am at the family home, 1312 Swetland Street, West Scranton, a victim of sleeping sickness. He is the second victim of the disease in Scranton. Prof. McAndrew was taken ill just one week ago to the day. Drs. Moylan, McDonnell and Reedy, who were called in on the case, diagnosed his illness as that of sleeping sickness and he was given the best of treatment, but nothing availed. During the past week, no less than six of the most prominent doctors of the city were called in consultation. At times during the past three days he was conscious and recognized members of the family and talked with the nurse in attendance. All day yesterday he seemed cheerful and it was believed by the attending physicians that he would recover. At 9 o'clock last night, he opened his eyes and talked with his parents, sisters, and brothers for a period of ten minutes. At 11pm, he suffered another unconscious spell and never regained his senses or talked with anyone until the end at 1:45. The deceased is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. McAndrew Sr., three sisters, and two brothers, Mary R., Ann, Marjorie, William and A. J. McAndrew, Jr. Announcement of the funeral will be made later."3 |
