The house is valued at 8 shillings, the lowest valuation for a house in this townland so it is possible it is little more than a small thatched or mud-roofed abode. Total valuation for land and house is 2 pounds.¹

I used Rootsireland.ie to search for children of Mary Minogue - found some of them. Then manually searched the parish records for St. Canice's to look for baptisms and found additional ones. Searched from 1845-1868.

John Burke, stepson, was baptized in 1854, so he would be 26, not 22. Also, it appears that Mary would be much older as her first child, William was born in 1845.; Principal=Simon Hogan⁵

#68 - Died July 25, 1905, 72 years, female, white, born Ireland, died of dysentery. Resided at 156 LakeView, Ward 23, died at residence. Had illness for 17 years. Parents born Ireland, buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, physican was A.B. Howard and undertaker was Flynn-Froelk.
Note - It does not say who provded the information and it appears conflicting with the date of death on her gravestone (July 27). Also, it states that she was born in Ireland. Also, states she was 72, which would likely be too young be married in 1844 (12) and to have a child in 1845 (13).^2,10

John Minogue b. s 1793, d. c 1857; I have accumulated the following evidence which I believe lends credence to this theory.
1. Baptismal record of "Mathew", son of John Minogue and Mary Loughman, 30 April 1828.
2. On his marriage registration in 1860, Mathew stated that his father's name was John Minogue, farmer. No mother's name was given.
3. On his military discharge records, he stated that he was from Ballycallan (County Kilkenny).
4. When Mathew joined the RIC in 1849, he had to have a character reference and this was given by Rev. Simon Fogarty, Parish Priest of Ballycallan (helps to verify place of residence).
5. I have a DNA match on Ancestry with Scott Brown (31cM in 2 segments) as does my sister (44cM in 5 seg.) - both indicating a high confidence of 4th-6th cousin relationship. Scott's 2nd g-grandmother is Catherine Manogue (sic) and there is a paper trail for her back to Patrick Minogue and Mary Dunphy. Patrick was living in Ballyfrunk when he married in 1866. I believe that the same Patrick was baptized in 1848, son of Thomas Minogue and Catherine Phelan and they were the only Minogue family who had baptisms that listed their residence as Ballyfrunk other than the family of Patrick Minogue and Catherine Butler.
6. Mathew, from several records, such as military and death registration appears to have been born in 1829 or 1830. Due to the DNA match and his father's name being John, I therefore believe that Mathew was the son of John Minogue and Mary Loughnan and the brother of Patrick and Thomas.^2,3,4,1

Ballyfrunk, Ballycallan Civil Parish, County Kilkenny, Leinster Province, Ireland; This is based on the date of baptism. When he was discharged from the Service on the 6th of September 1871, he stated he was 40 years, 9 months old. This would place his birthdate between Nov. 6 - Dec. 6, 1830.
His death registration states he was born in 1831.
The place of birth was also given in his military discharge record.
The Army Discharge papers also state he was 22 years old when he attested on December 22, 1852 (placing his birth year as 1830 or late 1829).
The RIC enlistment states Age is 20 on 16 October 1849, if correct, would indicate date of birth between 16 Oct. 1828 and 16. Oct. 1829.^5,6,7,3,4,8

An entry from a researcher on Rootsweb states the following in regard to Father Simon Fogarty: "Co-operation in Action. Kilmanagh Co-operative Dairy Society Ltd., 1894 - 1994 gives the following FOGARTYS: Honora (1894), Michael (1894), Nicholas (1894), Peter (1894), and Rev. Simon FOGARTY parish priest of Ballycallan. Rev. Simon FOGARTY was an active member of the Irish Tenants League and his family was evicted from their 'Scully Ranch' at Rathmacan c1849. Plaque and grave in Ballycallan Chapel."

Items of Interest:
Priest was from Ballycallan where Mathew stated he was from in his later enlistment in the British Army.
Recruits were required to be 5 feet, 9 inches tall unless their father had served, then they were allowed to be 5 feet, 8 inches. Does this mean his father also served in the RIC?
Recruits were not allowed to serve in their County of Origin, thus he was stationed in Westmeath (to the north of Kilkenny, in central Ireland).⁴

In the British Army he had started out as Private and was promoted to Corporal, but when he transferred to Canada he had to start as a Private again even though he had already served over 11 years.³

Quebec, Canada; When Matthew came to Canada, he would have had to re-enlist in the Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment, which was part of a Colonial army, since he had previously been in the Royal Irish Rifles.

Some history on the regiment:
The regiment was raised in early 1840 as the Royal Canadian Veterans Regiment and redesignated as the Royal Canadian Regiment and finally as the Royal Canadian Rifle regiment on August 13, 1840. The regiment was raised primarily as a deterrrent to deserters from British Line Regiments who were attracted by the higher rates of pay available in the United States. The regiment would also act as advanced ouposts at American border points in case of attack. The volunteers for the regiment were from 19 British Line Regiments then on service in Canada and had to be of good character and had service with good conduct. The regiment was ten companies strong with some 1078 other ranks. The term of service was for ten years and after that the men could serve either Veteran Companies or the Militia. Due to a shortage of personnel who were experienced in the early 1850's, volunteers of fifteen years service of good conduct in a line regiment were eligible for the regiment and were required to serve a further ten years after which they could purchase government lands at a reduced rate. Men who had fifteen years of service and on pensions from line regiments were also eligible to serve in the Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment. The regiment varied in company strenth from time to time, dropping to six companies in 1852, ten in 1858, and 14 in 1860. On December 2, 1862 it absorbed two companies of the three Royal Newfoundland Companies. The Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment was disbanded on Sept. 30, 1870. The regiment served from Lower Fort Garry to the Niagara frontier as well as being stationed at Fort Henry in Kingston, Ontario and on the Red River during the Rebellion of 1870. Some 262 other ranks volunteered to join Canadian Militia regiments after the disbandment of this long standing corps and a further 281 took discharge in Canada, thus the regiment provided Canada with some 543 families of good character for settlements across the large budding nation. The nickname for the corps was the "bullfrogs" and the uniform was green with scarlet facings. - from Stewart's book.¹⁸

Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin. Medal 2015 . Many other entries for others on this page seem to indicate that being on guard meant guarding Fenian Prisoners in the Kingston Penitentary.
Medal #2015 was sent to the Pensioner Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, Dublin. According to a Canadian federal archivist, these medals were sent out around 1899-1901 and only to living veterans and only to their current address.
The 83rd Regiment of Foot, Brass was a County of Dublin unit. It was raised in Dublin in 1793 but did not use the County name until 1859. After 1881, they became known as the 1st Battalian Royal Irish Rifles and eventually the Royal Ulster Rifles. There is a listing for a M. Minogue of the 2nd Royal Irish Regiment receiving a medal for service in Egypt in 1882 and 1885 but this is probably not our Mathew since he was in Canada at the time and quite old.
Al Pryor has the two medals in his possession which he got from his mother-in-law, Dorothy Peters, Mathew's granddaughter. He said that one is a campaign medal for service in India, with the Royal Irish Rifles, a British Army regular unit, raised in Ireland, with all Irish personnel. The other one is for service in the Fenian Raid of 1866, with an active reserve unit in Canada.
A Mr. Joseph Ryan who collects war metals confirms that Mathew did receive the Canadian Rifles medal - these were given to 13 officers and 124 enlisted men. He also found a listing for Mathew Manogue for the Indian Mutiny medal with a Central India clasp. He was not wounded there. The 83rd fought in the following battles in India: 12 Aug 1857 at Neemuch, 19 Sept 1857 at Nimbhera, 23 Oct 1857 at Jeerum, 28 March 1858 at Koorsee, 30 March 1858 at Kotah and 14 August 1858 at Bunass River (Kattara). The "Indian Mutiny" was the name given to the uprising of a large section of the Bengal army in 1857, which developed into a widespread movement of the agrarian and military revolt against British rule. Battles raged for nearly one and a half years before peace was declared.²⁷

The Board having examined and compared the Regimental Records, the Soldier's Book, and such other Documents as appeared to them to be necessary, report that after using every deduction required by Her Majesty's Regulations, the Service up to this day, that he is entitled to reckon, amounts to 18 years, 20 days, as shown by the detailed Statement on the 2nd page; during which period, he served abroad 12 6/12 years, viz:
at East Indies from 24 Oct. 1853 to 2 May 1858 (4.7 years),

Its' attraction was the nearby Grand Trunk (later Canadian National) railway, which would be the arrival point for a migrant, or a railway worker unfamiliar with the city. The last time he is mentioned as working for the railway is in the 1895 London Directory as a laborer in the GTR stores. He would have been 64 years old at the time.

This Indenture made the thirteenth day of March in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven…Between the Reverend John English of the Town of Cobourg in the county of Northumberland and Province of Ontario Minister of the Gospel and Lyman English of the village of Oshawa in the county and Province of Ontario Esquire surviving Executors and Trustees of the last Will and Testament of Noble English late of the Township of London in the county of Middlesex and Province of Ontario Esquire deceased (hereinafter called the
Grantors”) of the First Part and Matthew Minogue of the Village of London East in the County of Middlesex and the Province of Ontario Laborer (hereinafter called the “Grantee”) of the Second part.
Whereas the said late Noble English departed this life on or about the ninth day of May One thousand eight hundred and seventy two having previously made and published with all the forms required by Law to pass Real Estate in Ontario his last Will and Testament dated the twelfth day of November One thousand eight hundred and seventy and there of appointed the Revered Noble Franklin English and the Grantors the Trustees and Executors and did thereby give and devise unto them and the Survivors and Survivor of them all his Estate of every description. This Indenture made the 20^th day of March in the yar of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven. The Pursuant of the Act respecting Short forms of Mortgages:
Whereas Matthew Minogue of the Village of London East in the County of Middlesex and Province of Ontario Laborer (hereinafter called the “Mortgagor”) of the First part, Ann Minogue wife of the mortgagor of the Second Part and The Revered John English of the Town of Cobourg in the County of Northumberland…Minister and Lyman English of the Village of Oshawa…surviving Executors and Trustees of the last Will and Testament of a Noble English late of the Township of London…Esquire deceased (hereinafter called the “Mortgagees”).
Witnesseth that in consideration of One hundred and fifty-four Dollars of lawful money of Canada now paid by the said Mortgagee to the Mortgagor…And the said Ann Minogue wife of the Mortgagor hereby bars her dower in the said lands. (Definition by transcriber - When a woman gives up her right to lands which her husband owned she “bars her dower.” This is done whenever his land is sold and is shown in the land record. If this is not done it could be for many reasons such as; divorce, adultery, insanity, nonresident, whereabouts of wife unknown, sale of land for taxes, man single or widowed, and various others.)
Provided this Mortgage to be void on payment of one hundred and fifty four dollars…with Interest at six per centum per annum as follows that is to say – On payment of the said principal sum in three equal annual installments on the fifteenth day of March in each year and in payment of interest on the unpaid principal money yearly on the fifteenth day of March such interest to be computed from the fifteenth day of March AD 1877 and the first payment of principal and interest due on the fifteenth day of March AD 1878.

Mathew's neighbors are John Ryder at 511 Quebec, Thomas Duff, baker, on part of lot 19 but it is vacant and William Battensby, bricklayer, at 527 Quebec.⁵¹

This is probably a reference to someone who worked for the railroad and would go out on a work train for weeks repairing ballast which is the bed on which the ties and rails are laid. This was before the availability of crushed stone, the workers had to find big rocks, crush them to size and wedge them into place.¹⁷

The street directory states that 529 Quebec Street is located in the block between Lorne Ave. and Princess Ave. There are 3 houses on the west side of the block - 511 owned by John Bider, then a vacant lot, then 527 owned by Wm. Battensby, and 529 owned by Matthew Minogue. Princess Ave. ends here and then there are private grounds on the other side of Princess. On the east side of Quebec in the same block as Matthew, there are vacant lots and a Railroad crossing.⁵⁸

Then a vacant lot on part of Lot 18 and 19, owned by John A. Croden.
Note - Although this record seems to indicate that Mathew still owned the house and land, a sale document dated 16 June 1896 actually indicated that he and Ann sold the property on that date. "This Indenture made in duplicate the sixteenth day of June One thousand eight hundred and ninety-six…Between Matthew Minogue of the City of London in the County of Middlesex Laborer of the First Part; Ann Minogue wife of the said part of the first part of the Second Part; and Elie Day of the said City of London, motorman of the Third Part.

"Matthew Minogue" is listed on the passenger manifest for the SS Lake Huron of the Beaver Line of the Canada Steamship Company that sailed from Montreal to Liverpool in September 1897. The official number of the ship is #84159 and it was registered as 2576 tons and the master was Frank Carey. Mathew is listed as a 60 year old Irish, married adult, travelling alone, of no current occupation. There were fifty passengers on board and they arrived on the 12th September.⁶¹

Royal Kilmainham Hospital, Dublin, County Dublin, Leinster Province, Ireland; As a military pensioner of the English military, Mathew was entitled to care in this veteran's facility. He must have been in ill health and left Canada so he could get free health care here. He lived in this soldier's hospital for three years until his death. The admission record states that his regiment was the 1/60 Foot which would have referred to his last regiment in the Canadian Army. Reference #K17689 and #K498919 were also given in the record but the meaning of these is unknown. Also a Rate of 9 1/2 is given of which the meaning is not clear.³³

Burial

Royal Kilmainham Hospital Cemetery, Dublin, Dublin County, Leinster Province, Ireland; The resident historian at Kilmainham (Paul O'Brien in 2015) compiled a burial list of NCOs and privates in the military grave site to the left of Bully's Acre some years ago. He was able to confirm that Mathew Minogue from the 60th Rifles Regiment was in fact buried there in 1900 as he is on the list. Many of the bodies were moved when St John's Road was being widened and Mathew's was one of these. After the work the bodies were then reinterred in a different spot in the cemetery and marked with a general memorial instead of the original single headstones, which apparently are now in storage. Consequently there is now no individual grave stone to see at the moment. Paul indicated that money has been set aside to repair the cemetery in the next few years and part of that will involve the re-instatement of the original headstones. Paul also confirmed that there are no next of kin details in the burial registers. There is also a brass plaque in the chapel commemorating over 300 soldiers who died in the hospital between 1880 and 1905 and Mathew's name is on this plaque.⁶³
