| Birth | 1878 | County Mayo, Connacht Province, Ireland; Parents are listed as Thomas Syron and Sabina Gallagher on his death certificate. I am suggesting the year of birth as 1878 as that date fits the age he gave when he emigrated in 1901 and the age he gave on his son, John's, birth certificate.1,2,3 |
| Immigration | 26 March 1901 | Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States; The Ship's Manifest for the S.S. Etruria, states that it left Liverpool, England on March 16, 1901 and arrived in New York Harbor on March 26, 1901. On board listing: Passenger #19 on Page 11, Ticket #3516, Syron, Manus, age 23, male, single, steelworker, can read and write, Irish from Mayo, has never been in USA before, final destination is Scranton. He paid for his own ticket and has $30 with him. He is going to see his cousin J. Syron of 513 Markman Ave. in Scranton. He was born in Ireland. Travelling with him on the same ticket # is - Syron, John, 24, farmer, Irish from Mayo, going to see his brother, Martin, at 530 N. Main Street in Scranton, he bought his own ticket and has $6 with him. My thoughts: I believe that Manus is the son of Dominick Syron and Honor Merrick who was baptized in Aug. 1877 and so this would fit his age given on the manifest. Also, he has a first cousin, named Joseph Syron, son of Thomas Syron and Celia Gallagher, who is living in Scranton at the time. Joseph is the only "J. Syron" that I can find in the 1900 Census in Scranton. The other person travelling, John Syron, who says he is the brother of Martin, is also a son of Thomas Syron and Celia Gallagher, although the age is a little off. That would mean that Manus and John who are travelling together are first cousins.; Principal=Manus Syron3 |

| Obituary | 24 April 1908 | The Scranton Republican, Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States; "Two Accidents At The Hampton Mine - John Syron Instantly Killed and Alex Roseo Probably Fatally Injured. Edward Nicholls Injured. - Two accidents, in which one mane was instantly killed and another probably fatally injured occurred at the Hampton mine of the Lackawanna company yesterday morning at about 10 o'clock. John Syron, miner, of the 1900 block on Price Street, had his life crushed out by a heavy fall of roof. He was instantly killed and it was fully an hour before other workmen extricated the bruised and mangled body of the unfortunate man from beneath the pile of coal and rock. Syron fired a blast in the roof and after the smoke had cleared from the chamber went back to note the effect, when the fall came. The remains were taken to the Syron family home in the mine ambulance." Article continues about other accident.5 |

| Military | 24 August 1897 | Leeds, Yorkshire County, North England, England; Manus signed up for "Short Service" (usually 7 years), this is information from his Attestation Papers on Aug. 24, 1897: #6793, Manus Syron from the Parish of Adreen, near the town of Mayo, in the County of Mayo, aged 19 years, 8 months, labourer. Joining the Grenadier Guards. He is 5 ft., 8 1/2 inches tall and weights 146 pounds. Minimum chest measurement is 35 and 1/2 inches, maximum is 38. His complexion is sallow, brown eyes, brown hair, and he has 2 scars - one on right side of belly and one on right side of jaw. He is Catholic and after the medical exam was declared fit and was given the rank of private in the 3rd Battalion. On the 25th Februay, 1898, he was tried by DCM and convicted of "sleeping at his post" and was given 28 days of Hard Labour but 7 days were remitted by confirming officer. He returned to duty on March 18. On May 12, 1898, he was discharged from Service as "medically unfirt for further service" and was given 230 days of service towards a pension. His character in the service was listed as good. The disability is listed as flat foot - "this man was noticed on his arrival at the depot to have a tendancy to flat foot. This has now increased and he cannot march properly. He was not brought up as a recruit under 3 months as he develped scarlet fever and was on sick furlow for his recovery. (hospitalized from Nov. 5, 1897 until Jan. 22, 1898). The disease is not the result of service, or climate, and has not been aggravated by vice, intemperance or misconduct. It states that the disability is permanent and will not interfere with his earning a livelihood. Next of kin is listed as his father, Dominick Syron of Doonaroya, Boughadoon Post Office, near Crossmolina.3 |
That would mean that Manus and John who are travelling together are first cousins.; Principal=John Syron4 |
