Abraham Alexander1
#1606, (9 December 1718 - 28 April 1786)
| Birth* | 9 December 1718 | Cecil County, Maryland, USA; The King reference states that he was born 9 Dec 1717, however, his tombstone states he was 68 which would support the 1718 date.1,4,5,6 |
| Occupation* | | Maryland, USA; started life as a cooper3 |
| Marriage* | 1749 | Maryland, USA; Principal=Dorcas Wilson1,3 |
| Land* | | According to King, Abraham and his wife moved to North Carolina soon after their marriage in 1849. The county seat of Wadesboro was 75 miles from Mecklenburg so therefore many land deeds were not recorded there. The first courthouse there was destroyed by fire so all records were lost anyway. No records of land grants were found for Alexander until 1765. Many settlers had "staked" off parts of the land. In 1865, Henry McCullough, was appointed by the Crown to survey the land. Many of the squatters refused to surrender their land, others claimed they were in the bounds of South Carolina. In the summer of 1765, McCullough first went to the "home of Capt. Abraham Alexander on Shugar Creek". However, when he arrived there he was met by about 150 angry settlers. He later reported to the Governor in a lengthy report that he was threatened with bodily harm. It is reported that "Abraham argued with the crowd that McCullough had a legal right to the land and perhaps he agreed to serve as one of his surbeyors, in any event , whatever may have been the cause, Abraham was attacked by the settlers and was severely mauled and injured." The exact location of his house is not known but it is known he had a mill on what was called Alexander's mill branch of Shugar Creek. It appears that the house was eventually built on 620 acres he obtained by grant from Lord Augustus Selwyn on this mill branch. The land is now covered by the Charlotte Country Club. His home stood on a portion of the presen day golf course and until the links were changed recently the rock foundation of "Mansion House" as he called it in his will could be seen above ground.3 |
| Land | 16 April 1765 | Rowan County, North Carolina, USA; This consisted of 600 acres on the Catawba River.3 |
| Land | 15 January 1766 | 360 acres on Garrison's Creek, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA3 |
| Land | July 1767 | 120 acres, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA3 |
| Land | October 1767 | 125 acres, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA3 |
| Occupation | circa 1775 | Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA; as a magistrate on the inferior cout of the county. Also as a member of the Safety Committee in the county and as an effort to help the war effort, he required all citizens to carry a certificate of their political standing, signed by him.3 |
