| Birth* | 22 March 1747 | Bladen County, North Carolina, USA; In C. L. Hunter's book his date of birth is given as 1745. Cabarrus County at this time was part of Bladen. However, Martin, his father was on the tax lists for Lunenburg County until 1852, so I suspect John was really born there.1,2 |
| Marriage* | 1768 | Principal=Catherine Barringer1,3 |
| Note* | Hunter states that John raised a "numerous family", but only three children were in his will.4 | |
| Residence | Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA; According to the Worth Ray source, John lived on the North side of the Rocky River and the land extended to the line of Rowan County.5 | |
| Residence* | and his family resided at "Dutch Buffalo" Creek, at the Red Hill, known to this day as "Phifer's Hill" (9 this written by Hunter in 1877). It was on the plantation of John Phifer, three miles west of Concord, that the gallant band of "Black Boys" headed by Captain 'Black Bill Alexander' of Sugar Creek, aided by the Whites and others from the neighboring congregation of Rocky River, effected their memorable achievement in 1771, of destroying the king's powder , which was on its way from Charleston to Hillsboro, to be used by a tyrannical Governor. The reader should bear in mind this blackening of faces, to prevent detection, was in the spring of 1771, when the patriotic sentiment of this country had not ripened into that state of almost entire unanimity which characterized it, and the State generally, four years later. | |
| Land | 26 July 1774 | Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA; There were two tracts of land lying on Great Coldwater Creek (a branch of Rocky of Johnston River) bought for a "valuable sum". One tract contained 164 acres and the other 50 acres which was on the ridge of the Great and Little Coldwater Creek joining the other tract. The deed was witnessed by Thomas Pok and John Barringer and proven in open court at the October term of 1774.6 |

| Burial* | between December 1776 and January 1777 | Red Hill Cemetery, Concord, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA; Hunter states that "filled an early grave and lies buried at the "Red Hill" on the Salisbury road, where a decaying headstone, scarcely legible, marks the last resting-place of this true patriot". (This would have been written in 1877).4 |
