| Journal* | James E. Balkcom; James E. Balkcom and Mary (Polly) (maiden name probably Murphy) of Duplin County, North Carolina are the earliest known Balkcom ancestors of the Oklahoma Balkcom family. James' parents have been impossible to prove through standard research but DNA tests show matches between some of the descendants of James E. Balkcom and some descendants of Hester Balkcum, the widow of John Balkcom of Duplin County, suggesting strongly that Hester was James' mother. When James was born in 1807, Hester had been a widow for four years and there is no evidence she ever remarried. Her late husband John Balkcom was likely a descendant of the New England Balkcoms who arrived in America in the mid-1600s, and Alexander Balkcom of Providence, Rhode Island in the 1600s was among the first of these. It has been thought that James was a descendant of this Alexander, but it appears that James' father was not a Balkcom although that is not proven. Indications are that James' wife Mary was a Murphy from the Duplin County area of NC but proof has not been found. Some time before 1838, when James was around age 30, he moved from North Carolina to Lowndes County, Georgia, and it was likely there that he married Mary Murphy who had apparently also come down from North Carolina to Georgia and was a neighbor. They started what was to become a large family in Georgia and in a few years they moved to Dale County, Alabama where they bought considerable land and where they made their permanent home. James was by occupation a farmer and a hatter. One son, Brantley, at age 18 married a neighbor girl, Roseann Brannon. It was their son, John Ira Balkcom, who shortly after his own marriage moved his family west to Oklahoma. John Ira Balkcom and Ida Baldwin were the progenitors of the Balkcom family of western Oklahoma and there are many descendants of John Ira and Ida living now in Oklahoma as well as all over the U.S. | |

| Census | 23 July 1860 | James E. Balkcom; Newton Post Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA; "James Balkcom", head, age 53, farming, born in NC, real estate value $1500, personal estate $700. The households of John W. Balkcom (son of James and Mary) and wife Nancy age 19 (newly married) and Daniel Murphy (with wife Elizabeth and a 12 year old male Milton Murphy) were adjacent. Neither of the other families showed land holdings so it's likely that they had houses on the land of James Balkcom. Also listed on the same census page were Lewis Deal and wife Nancy J. Brannon Deal, with family. Nancy J. Brannon (person ID#1314) was the oldest daughter of Rosier Brannon and Anzilla Galloway, and sister to Rose Ann Brannon who was daughter-in-law to James and Mary Balkcom.
